Cate White works in a few different modes and styles, but her overarching intention is to find glimpses of expression free of cultural biases, inherited belief systems and other manipulative and unfree forces at work in our minds and hearts.
This selection of pieces reflects her interest in the interface between blackness and whiteness. In these works, Cate addresses this interface by inserting blackness into the normalized all-white visual culture. Cate states that she can only speak about African-American experience as a white observer, but she speaks about her experience with African-American culture as a participant, aware of perceived differences and trying to make contact. By talking about our shared experiences, she believes we learn from each other and get closer to our unconditioned essential qualities.
“We are not separate but all inhabiting a shared history that needs recognition and healing.”
